| Breaking News | | Saturday, May 9th, 2009: Gonzáles Twirls Shutout The Raleigh manager told reporters after the game, "When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy. The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."
He was talking about Santiago Gonzáles, who had just hurled a fine 5-hit shutout over the New Brunswick Kingpins. He had 6 strikeouts and 1 walk in the Raleigh 2-0 victory.
"An outstanding job," the New Brunswick manager said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."
This year Gonzáles has fanned 47 in 52 innings and collected a 5-1 record with a 1.38 ERA. | | Monday, May 4th, 2009: Appalachian Mountain League Announces #1 Player At the age of 26, Otis Watts might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Raleigh first baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the Appalachian Mountain League Player of the Week Award.
He racked up 10 hits in 26 at-bats, 3 home runs and 4 RBIs last week in 7 games.
This year Watts is hitting .326 with 4 home runs. | | Friday, May 1st, 2009: April's Best Batter Announced Chris Allen is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Raleigh right fielder joined that select company when the Appalachian Mountain League announced the results of April's voting.
Allen totaled 31 hits, 11 walks, 8 home runs, 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored last month to put together a .344 batting average and .422 on-base percentage.
