| Breaking News | | Saturday, August 16th, 2008: Sea Lions Pitching Ravaged by Maiyani 5 times is a charm -- at least in the world of baseball. When a player gets 5 or more hits in a game, he is honored in the record book and the latest honoree is Iskinder Maiyani of the Bergen Cliff Hawks.
He tore up the Monterey Sea Lions to the tune of 5 hits in 5 at-bats in the Bergen 9-4 win today at Cliff Hawks Ballpark.
"Maiyani was a tough out today," the Monterey manager said to the press in the postgame interview. "He hit some very good pitches with that quick bat of his. Not an easy out, that's for sure."
I. Maiyani singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
So far this season Maiyani has hit .256 with 1 home run, 27 RBIs and and scored 20 times. | | Tuesday, May 20th, 2008: Mathews Spins Shutout Against New Haven Ronnie Mathews bent a little, but he didn't break against the Politicos. The Bergen pitcher hurled a 4-hit 3-0 shutout in a fine performance, surrendering no walks and putting up 5 strikeouts.
"Ronnie is good at getting out of jams," his manager told reporters after the game. "He's almost more effective when he gets guys on base or gets behind in the count, because he uses your aggressiveness against you."
This year Mathews has compiled a 3-0 mark with a 3.00 ERA. | | Monday, September 3rd, 2007: Rivas Humbles Youngstown All went well for Carlos Rivas of the Bergen Cliff Hawks as he pitched his team to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Youngstown Thunder, limiting them to 6 hits while ringing up 10 strikeouts and surrendering 1 walk.
In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Rivas.
His manager described him this way: "He's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy. He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."
The Youngstown skipper said, "He doesn't give you anything twice. It's a guessing game with him and today my club was always guessing wrong."
This year Rivas has a 4-8 mark in 27 starts with a 2.91 ERA. He has given up 155 hits in 160.2 innings, struck out 111 and issued 55 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .247 batting average against him. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 70-72, .493 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 12.0 GB | | Record at home | 39-32, .549 PCT | | Record on the road | 31-40, .437 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 5-4, .556 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 26-20, .565 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 20-22, .476 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 50-50, .500 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in April | 11-9, .550 PCT | | Record in May | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in June | 12-13, .480 PCT | | Record in July | 16-13, .552 PCT | | Record in August | 12-16, .429 PCT | | Record in September | 5-6, .455 PCT |
