| Breaking News | | Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008: Who Says Nobody's Perfect? Sometimes a pitcher is good, sometimes he's lucky, and sometimes he's both. Many times that's what it takes to hurl a perfect game.
In the postgame press conference Valentín Toro chuckled, "Sometimes you would rather be lucky, than good. I was good today...good and lucky. My guys caught some that you normally don't catch. That's how you toss a no-hitter. But a perfect game requires a heck of a lot more...and lots of luck, too, where you catch some that nobody ever catches."
Valentín Toro got his perfect game today at Metros Ballpark, leading the Kenai Traders to a 2-0 win over the Kivalina Bowheads. He retired all 27 hitters he faced, yielded no hits, walked no one and fanned 6 batters in a superb performance that was a lot more skill than luck.
Up to now Toro has compiled an ERA of 3.29 with a 6-6 mark over 15 starts. He has 31 strikeouts in 87.2 innings and has held opponents to a .269 batting average. | | Saturday, July 26th, 2008: Williams Socks It to Traders, Cracks 5 Hits Norm Williams really sizzled at the plate today. In a game played at Thunderclouds Ballpark, the Cold Bay third baseman blistered the Kenai Traders for 5 hits in 5 at-bats to pace his club to a 15-5 victory.
"Williams was too tough to get out today," the Traders skipper said in his postgame interview. "No matter what we threw him, he hit it. And he hit some good pitches, too."
N. Williams doubled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit a solo-shot off J. Vásquez in the 9th.
This season Williams is batting .306 with 19 hits, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs, .348 OBP and has scored 11 runs. | | Friday, July 25th, 2008: López on Fire, 5-5 Against Kenai It was a hits blitz for Carlos López at Thunderclouds Ballpark. The Cold Bay Eleven center fielder tore into Kenai for 5 hits in 5 at-bats to pace Eleven to a 5-1 victory and wrote his name into the baseball record book.
The manager for the Traders bemoaned his pitching, saying, "We fell behind and weren't locating well. Once you get behind in the count, you have to make real good pitches, rather than good pitches, and we weren't able to do that today." He added, "Not to take anything away from López, but bad location was the story of the ballgame. That's why we lost the game."
C. López singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off J. Cortéz in the 9th.
This season López is swinging the bat at a .407 pace. He has hit 2 home runs and scored 10 times, while driving in 8. His on-base percentage is .453 and he has played in 30 games. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Rafael Antonio | ruptured bicep tendon | 3 weeks | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 53-37, .589 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 25-20, .556 PCT | | Record on the road | 28-17, .622 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 6-3, .667 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 23-8, .742 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 19-10, .655 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 34-27, .557 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in June | 9-6, .600 PCT | | Record in July | 11-16, .407 PCT | | Record in August | 19-9, .679 PCT | | Record in September | 14-6, .700 PCT |
