| Breaking News | | Monday, June 29th, 2009: 5-5 Game for Castillo Marcos Castillo was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over Ballpark of Cave Springs, collecting 5 hits, but wasn't able to win the game. He got his 15 minutes of fame and the Wasilla Sledge Dogs got the 12-5 victory over the Fairbanks Grunts.
"Headlines and highlights are great, but it takes a lot of luster off of it because we lost the game," he expounded to the press after the game.
After the first three hits, everybody's in the ballpark was drawn to him each time Castillo stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Fairbanks shortstop said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for high average is to relax, concentrate, and hit the ball where they ain't." That's exactly what he did today as Castillo finished the game with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.
M. Castillo singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off A. Mejía in the 9th.
Thus far in 2009 Castillo is hitting .301 with 2 home runs, 9 RBIs, 9 runs scored and has compiled a .348 OBP. | | Monday, June 29th, 2009: González on Fire, Named Player of the Week So far in his young career, Raúl González has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the Alaskan League in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.
The 22-year-old Fairbanks Grunts third baseman hit at a torrid .440 clip as he collected 11 hits in 25 at-bats, 1 home run, 7 RBIs and 5 runs scored.
This season González is batting .500 with 1 home run. He has scored 6 runs and driven in 10. | | Tuesday, June 9th, 2009: Hits Galore: Parkinson Drills 5 Hits Denny Parkinson really did a number on the Grunts in the Kivalina 9-3 victory. Not just anyone can get 5 hits in 5 at-bats. But Denny Parkinson did just that today for the Bowheads and gave his batting average a healthy boost and sparked his club in the win.
"I felt real good in the batter's box today. I had confidence in my swing and knew that it was there and that I could get the job done," the 19-year-old first baseman said after his record-setting performance.
D. Parkinson doubled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
