| Breaking News | | Tuesday, June 9th, 2009: Hits Galore: Parkinson Drills 5 Hits Denny Parkinson really did a number on the Grunts in the Kivalina 9-3 victory. Not just anyone can get 5 hits in 5 at-bats. But Denny Parkinson did just that today for the Bowheads and gave his batting average a healthy boost and sparked his club in the win.
"I felt real good in the batter's box today. I had confidence in my swing and knew that it was there and that I could get the job done," the 19-year-old first baseman said after his record-setting performance.
D. Parkinson doubled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
| | Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008: Who Says Nobody's Perfect? Sometimes a pitcher is good, sometimes he's lucky, and sometimes he's both. Many times that's what it takes to hurl a perfect game.
In the postgame press conference Valentín Toro chuckled, "Sometimes you would rather be lucky, than good. I was good today...good and lucky. My guys caught some that you normally don't catch. That's how you toss a no-hitter. But a perfect game requires a heck of a lot more...and lots of luck, too, where you catch some that nobody ever catches."
Valentín Toro got his perfect game today at Metros Ballpark, leading the Kenai Traders to a 2-0 win over the Kivalina Bowheads. He retired all 27 hitters he faced, yielded no hits, walked no one and fanned 6 batters in a superb performance that was a lot more skill than luck.
Up to now Toro has compiled an ERA of 3.29 with a 6-6 mark over 15 starts. He has 31 strikeouts in 87.2 innings and has held opponents to a .269 batting average. | | Wednesday, August 20th, 2008: Guzmán Gets 5 Hits Fernando Guzmán was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over the park, collecting 5 hits and leading the Eleven to a 20-0 victory over the Kivalina Bowheads.
After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Cold Bay third baseman said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."
Nobody was at home today as Guzmán finished the day with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.
F. Guzmán hit a two-run single in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off O. Valadez in the 8th.
Guzmán has a .282 average and a .304 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 42 hits, 2 home runs and driven in 23 runs. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 12-13, .480 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 6.0 GB | | Record at home | 4-9, .308 PCT | | Record on the road | 8-4, .667 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-3, .400 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 4-5, .444 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 4-2, .667 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 8-11, .421 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 3-7, .300 PCT | | Record in June | 11-11, .500 PCT | | Record in July | 1-2, .333 PCT |
