After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the New Jersey third baseman said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."
Nobody was at home today as Schaffner finished the day with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.
D. Schaffner singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a three-run home run off T. Farmer in the 6th and hit an RBI double in the 8th.
This season-to-date Schaffner has 1 home run and a .286 batting average. | | Sunday, May 17th, 2009: West Virginia-Charleston Announce Deal The players apparently knew they were on the trading block, so it did not surprise one of them when he learned that he had been traded to West Virginia. "Got my bags packed already," he said, when reached for comment. The Coal Sox will receive 24-year old minor league reliever Jake Tate, while 25-year old reliever Ken Cates will go to the Charleston Statesmen.
Cates has taken the hill for 12 relief appearances this season, nailing down 1 save while notching a 1-0 record with a 5.28 ERA. The Charleston reliever has limited opposing batters to a .189 batting average.
