| Breaking News | | Wednesday, October 1st, 2008: Omaha Wins, Shuts Out Longshoremen "That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Cyclones manager told reporters after today's game.
The Longshoremen ran into a buzzsaw as Norris Moncreiff cut them down to size 6-0 with a 3-hit shutout.
His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."
In the complete game whitewash the Omaha hurler doled out 3 walks and registered 6 strikeouts.
In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Norris goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."
Moncreiff also got some praise from the Canton manager.
"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."
In 2008 Moncreiff has a 6-17 record with a 5.22 ERA. | | Monday, September 29th, 2008: Imada Swats 3 Homers! Omaha first baseman Narahiko Imada sensed he was going to have a good game at the plate, but he underestimated just a little bit. Prior to the game, Imada predicted he would hit a home run against the Canton Longshoremen.
During batting practice he told his teammates, "I really got my swing down pat. I feel some thunder in the lumber. I'm gonna get me a home run in this game."
He was right. He did hit a home run -- three of them, in fact -- pacing the Cyclones over the Longshoremen 14-3.
"I was seeing good, feeling good and swinging good," Imada told SION reporters after the game.
To go along with the homers, he collected 8 RBIs and scored 5 runs.
N. Imada hit a three-run home run off M. Gómez in the 1st, walked in the 2nd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off P. Edwards in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off P. Edwards in the 8th.
This season in 153 games Imada is batting .283 with 50 home runs, 128 RBIs and has scored 99 times. | | Sunday, September 21st, 2008: Longshoremen Pitching Ravaged by Thomas After the Crystal Lake 13-10 victory over Canton and his 5-hit day first baseman P.J. Thomas told SION beat writers, "It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college ball, two hits in a game is very good...three or four hits even better...5 or more are out of sight...and if it is in pro ball...it is really something special. It will get you in the record books."
The 21-year-old player gained that distinction today at Gnat Field with a spectacular 5 for 6 game against the Canton Longshoremen.
The skipper of the Sandgnats spoke glowingly of Thomas, telling SION writers, "His swing is getting there. We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. P.J. did that to perfection today."
P. Thomas hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
This season Thomas has 18 home runs and a .324 batting average. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Matt Cox | torn labrum (Shoulder) | 6-7 months | On DL, eligible for return (60-day DL) | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 72-90, .444 PCT | | Position in Division | 3rd, 46.0 GB | | Record at home | 38-43, .469 PCT | | Record on the road | 34-47, .420 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 8-6, .571 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 28-20, .583 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 9-21, .300 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 63-69, .477 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 8-15, .348 PCT | | Record in May | 14-14, .500 PCT | | Record in June | 10-15, .400 PCT | | Record in July | 13-16, .448 PCT | | Record in August | 15-14, .517 PCT | | Record in September | 12-15, .444 PCT | | Record in October | 0-1, .000 PCT |
